Matcha Preparation

The Art of Matcha Preparation

1. Preparing the Bamboo Whisk

Soaking the chasen

Before you whisk your Matcha, treat your bamboo whisk (chasen) to a little wellness moment: soak it in warm water for 5–10 minutes. This softens the fine bristles and helps extend its lifespan.
Tip: Don’t waste the soaking water – use it to water your plants. A mindful gesture for your daily rhythm.

2. Choosing the Right Water

Matcha unfolds best in soft water. If your tap water is hard, use a filter or go for still mineral water. After boiling, let the water cool down to around 60–80 °C (140–175 °F). A thermometer or a temperature-controlled kettle ensures precision.
Quality Note: High-grade Matcha reveals its full character at lower temperatures – vibrant green color, delicate aroma, and a fine, stable foam.

3. Measuring and Sifting the Matcha

Sifting Matcha

For one serving, use 1–2 grams of Matcha – about 1–2 chashaku (bamboo scoops) or a level teaspoon. Clumps? No worries – simply sift through a fine strainer. This makes your Matcha extra smooth.

4. Creating the Creamy Base

Add a small splash of water to your Matcha and whisk it into a smooth paste – think velvety sauce consistency. This dissolves the powder properly and ensures a silky texture.

5. Whisking with Ease

Now fill the bowl halfway with water and whisk your Matcha in quick, loose "M"-shaped motions – avoid stirring in circles! After about 15 seconds, a fine foam will appear – the sign of a well-prepared bowl.

Matcha Moment: For many, this ritual marks a mindful start to the day – a calm moment just for you.

Tip for design lovers: Serve in a beautiful glass or top with milk foam art – even a quick Matcha can be a visual delight!

Creative Ways to Enjoy Matcha

Feeling adventurous? Matcha blends beautifully into juices (like pineapple or orange), plant-based milks, or smoothies. For best results, use an electric frother for smooth mixing.

Matcha also shines in the kitchen: from cakes and desserts to a boost in your morning smoothie – the creative possibilities are endless.
