Matcha for Beginners

Matcha for beginners
In the matchashop, we are often hear customers say: “I’ve never drunk matcha before but I’d like to try it so I’ll buy the least expensive matcha that you have. That way, if I don’t like it, I won’t have wasted too much money.”

A basic rule of thumb when it comes to matcha is: “The cheaper the matcha, the sharper the taste.” This also applies the other way around: “The more expensive the matcha, the more delicate and mild its taste.” Neither of these statements has anything to do with the quality of the matcha. Low-cost Japanese matcha is still high-quality matcha, but its taste is stronger and sharper; more ‘green-tea-like’ than an expensive matcha.

Although this sharp, green-tea-like taste is precisely what many of our customers like about matcha, it is not to everyone’s taste. Most people are not as keen on the sharp varieties and instead prefer the milder, more delicate, sometimes flowery and Matcha Lattefruity hints that matcha can offer.

And this is where the dilemma arises: if you buy the cheapest matcha because you “just want to try it out first,” you almost certainly won’t like it. The matcha will be too powerful and too strong for you; you’ll be scared away and never drink matcha again.

Of course, as a beginner, you should also avoid going straight for the most expensive varieties (unless you want to treat yourself to something really special, of course). Instead, you should start out with a mid-priced matcha that falls somewhere in the middle of the wide variety of tastes.

The mid-priced matcha varieties offer you a balanced blend of pleasant sharpness and bitterness but with a comparatively mild and fruity/flowery taste.

With this in mind, the ‘Matcha for beginners’ section presents several carefully selected varieties that we particularly recommend for beginners.

All of the matcha varieties presented here are extremely well-balanced and boast tastes that will win you over. Try our recommendations. Once you have finished the first packet, you can decide: “Is the matcha too sharp for me?” If so, you might like to go for a higher priced variety. Or: “Is the matcha too mild for me?” Then try a cheaper, stronger matcha next time.

For Centuries Matcha, the ground green tea, was a strictly protected secret. Only the clergy and the imperial house were allowed the drink of immortality after it reached from China to Japan in the 8th century.
