Yuzamashi Sonoke - (Cooling bowl)
Yuzamashi is the name for a side handle cooling bowl. The yuzamashi is used to temper the tea water in the preparation of fine Japanese green tea. The yuzamashi can also be used to prepare matcha if you want to serve several smaller portions.
The dark Yuzamashi Sonoke comes from the pottery town of Tokoname, which is especially known for the traditional production of Kyusu (Japanese green tea pot) and also Yuzamashi.
There are many ceramics made of red clay, which comes from flat layers of earth and is therefore easier to extract. The dark clay from which this yuzamashi is made comes from deeper layers of the earth, so it is more likely to be used to make the finer ceramics.
