RYUU from Nakanishi is exactly that: a matcha that doesn't actually come onto the market. And yet - if you're lucky - you'll be holding one of the few moments when it leaves the world it comes from in your hands.

RYUU Matcha comes from the Nakanishi family's renowned tea factory in the heart of Uji, one of Japan's most historic tea-growing regions. Since 1980, the family has been dedicated to organic tea cultivation - uncompromisingly organic, characterized by a deep respect for plants, the earth and tradition. Their tea garden is small - only 1.25 hectares in size - and is completely covered with black netting in order to promote the aroma of the leaves in the best possible way. The tea is only harvested once a year, exclusively by hand.

What makes RYUU so special? It is not just its purity or the elaborate processing from leaf to finely ground matcha powder on traditional stone mills.
It is its origin - and its purpose.

Traditionally, matcha of this class is not sold at all. It is entrusted to a selected tea teacher in Japan, who honors it in a ritual setting. The fact that this matcha is available at all is thanks to a unique decision by Mr. Nakanishi himself: He wants people far away from Kyoto to find access to deep quality - people who are willing to really get involved.

RYUU is a high-quality koicha matcha - developed for that concentrated, dense preparation in which texture and layers of flavor unfold in a special way. As a drinking matcha for connoisseurs (drinking grade), it reveals an aromatic complexity that is second to none: sweet, earthy, full-bodied - and incredibly round. Not a powder for quick everyday consumption, but a tea that invites you to take your time.

If you already have experience with koicha - or would like to gain it now - you will find RYUU a sensual lesson. It is perfect for deeper exploration and quiet ritual moments. However, those who prefer classic usucha with a lighter taste profile may find other teas in our range more suitable.

Only a few packs were released exclusively for the international market in 2024. Each of these comes in elegant wooden packaging in which the tea rests with dignity. In total, less than 1 kilogram of this rarity was produced this year - worldwide.

Recommended preparation:
1-2 g per 120 ml
65-80 °C, ideally around 65 °C
