Yame-cha
A disciple of the great Zen priest Eisai built Reigenji Temple in Fukuoka Prefecture in the thirteenth year of the Ohei period in the 13th century. There he planted the tea that had been brought to Japan from Ming during a trip to China and he tried to popularise tea cultivation.
This date marks the beginning of the cultivation of Yame-cha. The district of Yame on the southernmost Japanese island of Kyushu is known for its high quality tea production. This tea is characterised by its strong flavour and heavy sweetness.
